Neighborhood Apps Are Becoming a New Target for Scammers

Neighborhood-focused apps like Next-door, Neighbors by Ring, and Front Porch Forum have become popular tools for staying connected with local communities. Residents use these platforms to share recommendations, report suspicious activity, buy and sell items, and find local service providers.

Unfortunately, scammers are also taking advantage of the trust these apps create between neighbors.

Cybercriminals understand that people are more likely to trust recommendations from someone who appears to live nearby. By creating fake accounts or posing as local contractors and businesses, scammers are using these platforms to target homeowners looking for reliable services.

How These Scams Work

One of the most common scams on neighborhood apps involves fraudulent contractors. Scammers advertise services such as roofing, landscaping, home repairs, or remodeling projects. After building trust through fake reviews or neighborhood recommendations, they convince victims to send deposits or upfront payments.

In many cases, the “contractor” disappears after receiving payment and never completes the work.

Other scammers may perform the work — but without the proper experience, licensing, or qualifications they claimed to have. This can leave homeowners dealing with property damage, unsafe repairs, and even larger repair bills later.

Because these scams happen within trusted neighborhood communities, many victims let their guard down before verifying who they are hiring.

How To Protect Yourself

While these scams are becoming more common, there are several ways to protect yourself and your family when using neighborhood apps.

Verify Businesses Independently

If a business recommendation sounds suspicious or the pricing seems unusually low, do additional research before hiring anyone. Check reviews from multiple sources and verify the company through organizations like the Better Business Bureau.

A legitimate contractor should also be willing to provide proof of licensing, insurance, and references.

Speak Directly with Your Neighbors

Online recommendations can sometimes come from fake accounts or scammers pretending to be satisfied customers. When possible, speak directly with neighbors you know and trust before hiring a company.

A face-to-face conversation can help confirm whether the recommendation is genuine.

Avoid Oversharing Online

Be careful about posting detailed information about your home, schedule, upcoming projects, or financial situation. Scammers often use publicly shared information to target victims with highly personalized scams and social engineering tactics.

The more information they gather, the easier it becomes to appear legitimate.

Never Share Sensitive Information

Do not provide personal, financial, or banking information through apps, emails, text messages, or phone calls unless you have fully verified the identity of the individual or business.

Legitimate companies should have no issue proving their credentials before requesting payment or sensitive information.

Stay Cautious in Online Communities

Neighborhood apps can be valuable tools for building safer and stronger communities, but they should still be approached with caution. Trust should never replace proper verification.

Before hiring a contractor or responding to offers online, take a few extra minutes to research who you are dealing with. A little caution can prevent significant financial loss and unnecessary stress.

Stay alert, stay informed, and help keep your community safe online.
