The Hidden Price of a “Free” Gift

A new scam is making the rounds, disguised as a generous giveaway from a well-known company. Victims receive an email that looks like it’s from a trusted brand—often one people already shop with or have memberships to. The message promises a free reward in exchange for completing a quick survey and covering a small “shipping fee.” To increase the pressure, the email often claims there are only a limited number of gifts left, urging you to act fast.

Clicking the link takes you to a professional-looking survey page, but here’s the catch: both the survey and the gift are completely fake. The so-called shipping fee is just a way for cybercriminals to capture your credit card details. Once they have that information, scammers can rack up unauthorized charges, sell your data on the dark web, or even use your personal details to commit identity theft.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Don’t share payment details for “free” items. Reputable businesses will not require credit card information to send out no-cost promotional items.

  • Go straight to the source. If you want to confirm an offer, type the official website address into your browser rather than clicking a link in an email.

  • Trust your instincts. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is—even if the message looks like it’s from a familiar company.

Staying cautious and verifying offers before acting can help you avoid turning a “free” gift into a costly mistake.
